Righteous Indignation Over Benghazi

This is a letter from Steve Templin, to the Editor of the Daily Times, Salisbury, MD:T

To the Editor of The Daily Times,
This is my response to Garrett Preischs’ letter to the editor, from 5/20.

The “righteous indignation” of the conservatives over the tragedy in Benghazi was predictable and is nothing other than grandstanding partisan brinkmanship. Mr. Garrett Preisch was correct in his letter about Benghazi occurring during the watch of the nations first Black President, while at the same time, incorrect about the sanitizing of the correspondence to protect the re-election of President Obama. The agencies involved were doing, as David Ignatius of the Washington Post wrote on May 17, an exercise in CYA (“covering your ass”).

My question to the conservative is, Where was your “righteous indignation” over the attacks on the US Embassies in Calcutta, India on January 22, 2002, killing five, or Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on December 6, 2004, killing nine? Where was the GOP “righteous indignation” when U.S. diplomat, David Foy, was killed in Karachi, Pakistan on March 2, 2006? Where was this “righteous indignation” when there were thirteen attacks against US embassies during the Bush Administration?

Where was this “righteous indignation” when over four thousand of our sons and daughters were killed, and tens of thousands injured, in Iraq, for a war based on lies, revenge and profit?

Where was their “righteous indignation” when the House Republicans voted for an amendment, in 2009, to cut $1.2 billion from State Department operations, including funds for 300 more diplomatic security positions, and cut embassy security funding by $128 million in fiscal 2011, and $331 million in fiscal 2012?

A New Year…The Same Old Lying Harris!

Andy Harris begins the New Year by continuing his lies and misrepresentation of the facts! Instead of voting for the “fiscal cliff” legislation, he prefers that taxes on his cronies (i.e., rich doctors, along with the likes of the Koch brothers, Romney and the other wealthiest Americans) stay at one of the lowest rates they’ve been in 80 years! Remember the ’50s & ’60s, when the US was growing into the economic superpower that it became? Top tax rates were at some of the highest…90%…and so-called “job creators” didn’t blink an eye at the chance to start a business!  When I was starting my businesses, the tax rate was not as important as whether I felt the business was a good one and  I could make a profit.

"What's that, Mr. Koch? Vote AGAINST the 'Fiscal Cliff' legislation? You can count on me!"

“What’s that, Mr. Koch? Vote AGAINST the ‘Fiscal Cliff’ legislation? Sure…you can count on me!”

The truth be told, it was Harris and his cronies that created the “fiscal cliff” during the debt-ceiling debacle last summer; he and his Tea Party cronies refused to raise the debt-ceiling for monies that were ALREADY allocated by Congress, NOT for new spending, which was another lie that he liked to bandy about! So, they forced the plan to raise taxes on the Middle Class and the “sequester”, thinking that the GOP would take the White House and the Senate in the 2012 election. What he failed to realize is that the majority of Americans could see through his and the other GOP candidates’ lies and 19th-century ideas…and they were SOUNDLY rejected!

Instead of standing up and representing the people of the 1st District, Harris continues into 2013, catering to the rich, those who contribute to his campaigns, who are mostly from out-of-state, and ignoring the needs of the people who deserve his attention, including the farmers on the Eastern Shore! Oh, yeah, did I mention that he refused to support the 2012 Farm Bill? If saner minds hadn’t prevailed, we could be paying $6 or $7 for a gallon of milk!! Way to go, Dr. No!!

Andy Harris…The People Will Not Go Backward!

It is the People (not Corporations) that will decide the path of our country! We vote…Corporations do not!

I have confidence that intelligent, compassionate people and yes, even entrepreneurs such as myself, across the country, will choose the only real choice there is in this election…another term for the President! The only alternative is to go back to the same failed policies of the Bush/Cheney administration, which led our country into its current dilemma. As President Clinton said the other night…no one, not him or any predecessor, could have done any better than President Obama has done…we were on the brink of destruction and the President saved us from going over the edge, which would have made the Great Recession, the Great Depression, Part Deux!

A report yesterday, from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP), puts the blame for the Federal deficit squarely on the shoulders of George Bush. Why do you think the GOTP didn’t mention his name once during their Convention? The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, plus the Bush tax cuts, combined to form the basis for the deficit, through 2019. Common sense will tell you that you don’t cut revenues (Bush tax cuts) while fighting wars on 2 fronts! Who thinks that made sense?

Returning to the days when banks and Wall Street were given free rein to gouge and rape the Middle Class, when oil companies were allowed to drill without proper environmental protections, when the EPA was hog-tied from being able to protect the air and water our children and grandchildren breath and drink, and where global warming was dismissed as a “liberal myth”, will bring us back to the brink! The promise of job creation by the GOTP is not backed up by the statistics…over the past 50 years, Republican administrations have created 24 million jobs, while Democratic administrations have created 42 million jobs. This was told to us by President Clinton this week…and Reuters and other news agencies have backed these figures up!

Without the financial support of Koch Brothers’ organizations, Andy is a lost cause!

People like Andy Harris need to be sent a message…stop the obstruction…sit down and do the job you signed up for…negotiate, compromise and GET THE WORK DONE! Being an ideologue will not create jobs…being reasonable will!

Romney? Bongino? Harris? Really?

Can he relate?

Why is it that Republican candidates are so focused on attacking their opponents? Could it be because they have no real plan, except to return to the Bush days of less regulation, allowing the banks and Wall Street to continue their rape of the Middle Class; the Bush days, when two wars were waged (destroying the surplus in our budget that was handed to Bush by Pres Clinton); the Bush days, when, even though he had wars on two fronts, he decided to cut taxes, sending the deficit through the roof (and which he then handed to Pres Obama); the Bush days, when jobs were being lost at the rate of 500k, 600k, 800k+ per month; the Bush days, when the President felt that the fight to find bin Ladin was a waste of time & resources, which Bush then handed to President Obama, who felt that finding and killing the man responsible for the death of 3000 Americans on 9/11/01, was still an imperative…and then DID IT?

I especially love tracking the GOP “secret key phrases” – like “school choice initiatives”, meaning a voucher system for religious schools…the antithesis of what the Constitution stands for…separation of church and state! We are seeing the increasing rise of an American Taliban…those religionists who believe that God and the President should rule America, that their prayers should be taught in schools, that Christianity should be declared the official religion of the United States.

The founding fathers are tossing in their graves…their dream of an America free from the chains of religious rule or persecution, where a person’s beliefs should be personal and private, where people would not be intimidated by the church or the government…where the rise of a theocracy was feared as much as the rise of a monarchy!

Thinking too hard?

The GOP needs to read more about our history; they whine about how taxes are unfair for the wealthy, when, the truth is that personal income tax rates are near the lowest at anytime since the income tax started…35%. Those of us with experience and the motivation to research the facts, know that our tax rates in the ’50s and ’60s were 70%-90%…that even during the “Reagan years”, tax rates were lowered from 69% to 50% until the very end of Reagan’s 2nd term.

The GOP extremists should look in the mirror when they point at those they charge with an “entitlement mentality.” The truth is that the wealthy have been with that state of mind for the past 40 years, which is why wealthy incomes have risen explosively, while Middle Class incomes (and savings) have declined drastically…the American Dream is now ONLY a dream, with no hope of achievement by most Middle Class Americans, whose children will be the first generation NOT to do better than their parents!

What a jokester!

Romney? Ryan? Bongino? Harris? Really?

And the beat goes on…

The Senate on Thursday night blocked a $35 billion bill for states and localities to hire teachers and first responders, marking the second defeat for President Barack Obama’s jobs agenda in less than two weeks. The bill, which failed in a 50-50 vote, marked the first attempt by Senate Democrats to move pieces of the president’s American Jobs Act that was defeated by a Senate filibuster last week.

The GOP attack on the unemployed continues, unabated! What is it about JOBS that the Republicans don’t understand? Ahhh…right…compassion…economics 101…and, of course, defeating President Obama next year!  Perhaps, defeating the President is the biggest hurdle to overcome. The Tea Party-led Republicans are hell-bent on that goal, putting blinders on and forsaking all assistance to the American workforce until they either have one of their own in the White House, OR, until they are soundly defeated at the polls in 2012.

PROTEST AT CONGRESSMAN HARRIS’ OFFICE

JOBS, NOT CUTS!

The COALITION OF EASTERN SHORE PROGRESSIVES and MOVEON.ORG are hosting an event at the Salisbury office of Congressman Andy Harris, 212 W. Main Street, Salisbury.  The event will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2011, starting at 12:00 PM.

Protest at Rep Harris' Office - Aug. 2011

The purpose of the event is to protest the Congressman’s failure to act on the greatest need our country faces: JOBS!  The Congressman has been quoted in the recent past as believing that in order to create jobs, the government needs to lower taxes and increase incentives to corporations, something that has failed miserably over the past 12 years.  The Bush tax cuts have failed to create jobs, just as the deficit-reduction plan that the GOP-led House forced upon middle-class America, has failed.

Corporations are sitting on the biggest cash reserves ever, yet, they still have not created jobs, AND THEY WANT MORE CORPORATE ENTITLEMENTS! The GOP is waging all-out war on Middle-Class Americans, trying to squeeze them dry, just as Wall Street did in the economic debacle that ended with the collapse in 2008!

The time has come to stop the GOP from giving more to the greedy corporations and taking from the Middle-Class. If there are no jobs, there will be no “purchasing power” and the economic spiral will continue.  Congressman Harris has faithfully followed the demands of his party leadership, while ignoring the needs of his constituents. The Eastern Shore, Maryland and the rest of America needs JOBS, NOT CUTS!

If you want to find out more on how you can help make a difference on the Eastern Shore, contact the Coalition for Eastern Shore Progressives (CESP) today, at Info@ShoreProgressive.org.

TOGETHER, we can REBUILD THE AMERICAN DREAM!  We ARE the 99%!

"Say NO to the GOP entitlements to corporations, while they take away from the Middle-Class!"

The Left’s “Tea Party” Response!

This week, in the nation’s capital, thousands of progressive individuals and organizations are working to build a grassroots response to the Tea Party’s right-wing, libertarian, 19th-century approach to government and democracy.

Organizers of this week’s “Take Back the American Dream” conference in Washington are studying the tea party, as they build a response to support progressive causes. The effort is a response to Tea Party Republicans’ takeover of the House in 2010 and the continuing efforts to cut crucial social programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, student loans and many more.

FINDING A “NEW” DIRECTION

After the ’08 election, many Democrats said they falsely assumed that winning the White House would help them pass an agenda that would assist middle-class families. Instead, they were dismayed when Obama ditched a proposed “public option” for a government insurance plan from the health care overhaul and cringed when he cut a deal with Republicans to extend Bush-era tax cuts.

“People are totally ready to get behind (Obama), but I think what they’re not ready to give anybody is the benefit of the doubt that if we win an election and we all go home, things are going to change,” said Andy Stern, the former President of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). “That was probably the theory of the Obama election and taking over the House by the Democrats and the Senate as well. I think it was a failed strategy.”

So progressives have tried to build a movement, holding hundreds of house meetings across the country and staging protests at town hall meetings held by Republican lawmakers — a tactic that tea party activists used to build opposition to Obama’s health care plan.

A TURNING POINT?

Several speakers at the Conference, which has been streamed live, said Obama’s jobs bill could act as a turning point, a sign that the President has finally had enough and is taking the bull(shit) by the horns, taking a more aggressive approach to revive the economy and refusing to allow deep cuts to Medicare and Social Security. The President has barnstormed the country, rallying support for his $447 billion plan for tax cuts and public works spending, in order to stimulate the economy and get people back to work.

President "turning it around?"

While the House, controlled the GOP, is unlikely to pass the bill in its entirety, the White House believes that Obama’s direct approach to the American people will build support and show the GOP that it’s time to do what’s right for America. Progressives are thinking that the President has finally turned the corner, and understood that unless something was changed, he would face a critical uphill battle JUST to maintain his base of support.

TALKIN’ THE TALK & WALKIN’ THE WALK…FINALLY

“Why is the White House talking different? The White House is talking different because we are walking different,” said Van Jones, a former Obama policy adviser, who helped organize the Conference.

Progressives looked closely at Obama’s deficit reduction response and are pleased that he refused to cave in to GOP demands for a gradual increase in the minimum age requirement for Medicare, from 65 to 67. Last summer, Obama had originally agreed to the age increase in negotiations with House Speaker John Boehner (R – Ohio), before the talks fell apart. Democrats and Progressives demanded no age increases, arguing it would undercut their criticisms of a GOP plan that would overhaul Medicare.

On Social Security, Democrats have protested plans by GOP presidential candidates, who want to partially privatize it, letting younger workers divert part of their payroll taxes into a personal account to be invested outside of Social Security. The problem is that this money will then be up for grabs by Wall Street banks and investment houses, all dying to get their fingers in the pie!

SO…WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE THE PRESIDENT IN 2012?

The President doesn’t face a primary challenge in 2012, and GOP hopefuls have little chance of picking up support from longtime Democrats. But, in addition to the core stalwarts of the Democratic Party, the President will need progressives to knock on doors, staff phone banks and register voters — must-do jobs for any candidate’s base. Dissatisfied progressives and critically important independent voters could stay home on Election Day. They might even refuse to help finance the President’s campaign.

A recent survey by Gallup found that 45% of Democrats said they were more enthusiastic about the 2012 Presidential election than previous contests, while 44% expressed less enthusiasm. 58% of GOP voters, meanwhile, said they were more enthusiastic about 2012 than in past elections, and 30% said they were less enthusiastic. Gallup added that the so-called “enthusiasm gap” between Dems and GOP voters was the largest since 2000, in the race between Gore and Bush.

Many Progressives are betting that the “Rebuilding The Dream” movement can generate extra enthusiasm for the President next year and get the base, plus independents, excited about the race.

We need to get Progressives' hair on fire!

Rep. Jan Schakowsky, (D – Il), told Conference attendees that many of her supporters appeared “beaten down”by the state of the economy and the President’s current poll numbers among likely voters, but she said that Democrats and other progressives need to bring robust energy to the 2012 election. “We have to set people’s hair on fire about what America would look like if Republicans get their way,” she said.

Denouncing 6 Big Republican Lies!

EVERYONE NEEDS TO SEE THIS VIDEO!  It explains, in plain language, why the lies being told by the right-wingnuts need to be rejected by all of us.  The GOP strategists continue to lie to their “limited information voters” who need nothing more than a half-truth, cliche or metaphor, sounding patriotic, to make a decision. These voters fail to ask questions or perform the research to uncover the truth that will show the simple-minded drivel being expressed by people like Perry, Bachmann, Paul and yes, even the most “normal-sounding” of all the wingnuts, Romney!  They are leading this country down the path of a theocratic oligarchy! As Reich says in this video: We cannot become so cynical that we give up, throw in the towel and allow the wingnuts to win. It will put us all back into the 18th century, where royalty, the church and the rich held power over the poor. By giving up, we give our children and grandchildren a future of submission and scraping to survive, while the rich control the world!

Cantor…Then and Now!

Some things never change! There was a time that I thought people grew wiser as they aged from high school to adulthood.  We pass through college where huge changes occur; my alcohol intake skyrocketed, my ability to discuss philosophical and sociological issues went from a 1 to a 9 on the Richter Scale! Love entered my life and softened me in ways I never expected. Then, children suddenly appeared and brought more change…the selfishness that is inherent in the young, suddenly dissolves when you have your own children. Instead of “sel-FISH”, we become “sel-FLESS!”

These changes happen at different times for different people; but most people I know at or near my age (guess) seem to have gone through them. No wonder it surprises me to look at someone who is considered a “leader” by many, if not in reality, then certainly by the role he has taken. Consider Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA).  He is the Republican Majority Leader in the U.S. House of Representatives. Formerly, he was House Minority Whip, elected to Congress in 2001, after having served in the Virginia House of Delegates for 9 years and working as an attorney in his family’s real estate development business. Cantor is married and has three children.

Now, one would think that with all his experience in public and private life, plus marriage and raising three children, a person like Eric Cantor would have

"I want It When I Want It"

gone through a maturation process, right? WRONG!  When it comes to growth and maturity, Cantor is back in high school, waiting for the bell so he can go kick some sand in the face of the “90-pound weakling” who’s waiting to be picked up by his mom!  Now, how do we know what kind of person Eric was in high school? We need to go no further than his high school yearbook; the photo of the tie and jacketed Cantor, hair perfectly coiffed, a Mona Lisa smile on his kisser…and the quote he chose for “the Ages” to remember him:  ”I want what I want when I want it!”, attributed to the late 19th-century lyricist, Henry Blossom.

Sure, high school kids do stupid things; most of us have done things in high school that we would never do now, as adults, with our own kids! AND THERE IS THE RUB!  Eric Cantor acts today the same way he did in high school. His “no compromise” position in Congress seems to reflect the Blossom quote perfectly. Cantor’s most recent exposure as a selfish, greedy, demanding, non-empathetic and uncaring ‘kid’ is his refusal to support Disaster Aid for victims of the East Coast Earthquake and Hurricane Irene, expected to result in billions of dollars of damage. We’re talking about people flooded out of their homes, small businesses shut down, bridges and roads destroyed, and many who couldn’t afford insurance to protect themselves.  Cantor said he’ll approve aid IF he gets ‘what he wants’, which is corresponding cuts in Federal spending. Oh…I almost forgot…in 2004, after Hurricane Gaston caused $20 million in Cantor’s district, Cantor OPPOSED a bill to reduce Federal spending by an amount equal to disaster aid!

So, hostage-taking has again reared it’s head as a tool to get Eric what Eric wants, when Eric wants it!  No compromise,

"I want my rattle...NOW!" - Eric Cantor

no negotiation! ‘Instant gratification’ is something I always associated with babies and toddlers. If they don’t get what they want, WHEN they want it, there’s crying and screaming and whining and kicking and more crying; perhaps President Obama needs to buy a gold-plated baby rattle and send it over to Cantor’s office.  If nothing else, it may distract him from hurting people for a little while! “Ga-ga. Goo-goo. Bop-a woppa-goo-ga!”

Cantor Turning His Back On ALL Americans!

Just when we thought that the days of holding America hostage had passed, Rep. Eric Cantor takes center stage again!  This time, he has declared that those who have suffered losses as a result of the East Coast 5.9 quake, and Hurricane Irene, must forego any relief without corresponding cuts in other Federal programs. Unfortunately, Cantor’s house was not damaged in either calamities, so he is much more eager to take a stand on this issue.

"How Much Do I Care?"

What is it about Cantor – his personality, his background, his hatred of his mother – that causes him to act in such a cavalier way about the suffering of those without corporate resources?  He has shown, in the past, that he can act with empathy and compassion, when it comes to all those suffering, penniless, hard-working corporations, when he gives them the tax credits and subsidies they so ‘richly’ deserve.  How can he express such a heart for those BIG corporations, but fail to entertain the thought of any relief for the BILLIONS in losses that have been experienced by families and small-business owners, up and down the East Coast…INCLUDING HIS OWN CONSTITUENTS?

Cantor’s response to his critics seems reasonable: “Again, just like any family would operate when it’s struck with disaster – it finds the money it needs to to take care of a sick loved one or what have you and then goes without trying to buy a new car or put a new addition on the house –that’s the kind of situation we’re finding ourselves in at the federal level,” Mr. Cantor said. (Source: Interview on, where else? FOX News, 8/29)

To be honest and direct (would you expect anything else from my lips?), I am sick and tired of hearing about how “the Federal government needs to start acting like American families”, who supposedly “live within their means!”  The truth is, if the American family is living within it’s means, how do you account for total U.S. consumer debt at $2.43 trillion, as of May 2011? (Source: Federal Reserve’s G.19 Report on Consumer Credit, released July 2011)

The real truth is that when CREDIT started to be utilized in the United States on a large scale basis (after WWII), Americans stopped living within their means and instead, started relying on credit for everything, from washing machines, TVs, automobiles and housing, to vacations, clothing, gas, restaurants and groceries! Americans even use credit to pay for other credit! Talk about reliance!  If hypocite, Cantor, doesn’t have at least 2 credit cards or his house, car or ‘home addition’ financed in some way, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle. (stepping out on a big limb there, huh?).  The fact is that the average number of credit cards held by American cardholders is 3.5, as of year end 2008 (Source: “The Survey of Consumer Payment Choice,” Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, January 2010). And the number of credit cardholders in 2008 was 176.8 million. (Source: “The Survey of Consumer Payment Choice,” Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, January 2010).

So, WHAT THE HELL are right-wing conservative puppets spouting when they talk about “rugged individualism” and “self-reliance,” which, of course, goes hand-in-hand with the “belt-tightening” of American families?  I don’t think I even need to answer such an obvious question!

Now, is such an abundance of credit card and other credit spending good for America?  ABSOLUTELY!!  (You thought I was going to say “No”, didn’t you?). Two-thirds of our economy is made up of  CONSUMER SPENDING. Without credit, the economy of the United States of America falls to its knees.  I only need to point to the current economic crisis, when banks and credit card issuers have drastically curtailed lending and cut back on credit card issuance.  If it wasn’t for Federally-sponsored mortgage programs, 90% of the homes being sold today would still be sitting vacant, weighing down the accounting books of American banks more than they currently are.

OK…let’s get back to what this post started with: Talking about Cantor’s refusal to allow any further Irene and Earthquake disaster relief, without corresponding cuts in other Federal spending.  I have one question for Mr. Cantor: If we can’t rely on the Federal Government to assist Americans in times of disaster, without holding us hostage, then what can we count on?  It’s called Emergency Relief and Disaster Relief, because the money is needed NOW, because people and businesses are SUFFERING NOW!  These folks have been put out of their homes, seen their places of work destroyed and have no means of recovery (many couldn’t afford, and had no insurance during these two events). They can’t wait for hostage negotiations to render a decision whether they file for bankruptcy, live in the local “Y”, and start collecting Food-stamps and Welfare for them and their kids. Cantor can add them to the other 40 million Americans who are barely surviving because of spending cuts, deregulation of Wall Street and BIG corporation wholesaling of American jobs overseas! Welcome to the Tea Party, folks! Would you like fries with your tea?

"Welcome To My Circus!"

Cantor and the rest of his Tea Party ilk (definitely said with a sneer on my face) need to take a course in Sensitivity Training. They need to realize that the average American lives with a 2-month ‘cushion’ for survival, not with the huge cash reserves being held by BIG corporations.  Cantor and the circus that his people have created in Washington, need to fold up their tents, cash in their tokens, put down the cotton candy and step-up to the responsibilities they accepted when they took the job, according to Article 6 of the US Constitution,“…that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”
