Sad Day for the Eastern Shore!

It is a sad day for the Eastern Shore, to have a liar and a sham, like Andy Harris, be re-elected.  I was so hoping that this, my first post after the election, could call for a coming together of the “right” and “left.”  But, upon hearing Harris’ comments after his win, I am more committed than ever to replace him as our Representative.

Andy “Bizarro” Harris

He lives in a ‘bizarro’ world, claiming to have “reached out” to Democrats, when we know that he has voted against any proposals put forth by House Democrats or the White House.  His approach has even earned him the nickname, “Dr No”, because that has become his standard vote and position! And, according to his post-election comments, he will continue to live by his moniker and obstruct any progress in the House.

I am not whining about Harris’ win; the former Democratic candidate, Wendy Rosen, certainly didn’t help, by resigning a week after the deadline to remove her name from the ballot.  As such, Dr. John LaFerla could only run as the Democratic write-in candidate. I am just astonished by the failure of the commonsense Eastern Shore voter to see through the disguise and insincerity of Harris’ campaign. He is definitely a “RINO” (Representative In Name Only)!

When Harris holds himself out as a “great communicator”, saying that he is bringing both parties to the table, it just doesn’t fit with his history and performance, whether in the State Senate or in Congress.  In fact, Harris has been a major roadblock to both, the Maryland delegation and the House, where there have been multiple efforts by the Democratic leadership and the White House, to repair the economic mess perpetrated by the previous administration.

Harris lies when he talks about helping farmers, since he has voted against the Farm Bill, introduced by his own Party! Without its passage, our farmers will be hurt financially. He has voted against education, medicare, social security, job creation, health care and protecting our air and water, or the Chesapeake Bay.  In fact, only 4 bills were introduced (and passed) by Harris in his 2 years as Congressman. They dealt with reducing the tariffs on foreign-made men’s and women’s shoes! While millions of Americans were still unemployed and suffering, Andy embraced a foot fetish!

“Dr. No” – Doing nothing for the Eastern Shore!

Aside from the sound bites and clichés he has come to rely on, Harris cannot point to any real action on his part, to help our district or its residents.  He has failed to spur job creation, being more interested in expanding ‘fracking’ even though it has been shown to be destructive and dangerous, than he is in cooperating on solving our “Fiscal Cliff.”

He is a pawn of his corporate campaign contributors, mostly from out-of-state, and the sooner 1st district voters open their eyes, the sooner we will get a Representative who truly represents our interests. Until then, “Dr. No” will continue to be the obstructionist and do-nothing elected official, that he has been since his days in the Maryland Senate!

SU Students Support Wendy Rosen for Congress

My name is Steven Cenname, Salisbury University’s #1 political commentator, and I have endorsed businesswoman, Wendy Rosen, for Maryland’s 1st Congressional District seat in the US House of Representatives. In fact, I have founded “Students for Wendy Rosen for Congress” to help organize students and faculty to support her election efforts.

Wendy Rosen is a Democrat, running against freshman Republican extremist Andy Harris. Harris has done absolutely nothing to help Maryland’s Eastern Shore during his tenure in the US Congress. Defeating Harris will be an uphill battle, considering that Maryland’s new redistricting map has made the 1st district even more of a Republican leaning district, by adding conservative areas of Harford County and Baltimore County to it’s boundaries. The State Legislature did this to weaken Maryland’s other Republican representative, Roscoe Bartlett, by making his district more Democratic-friendly.

But if anyone can unseat Harris, it is Wendy!

Unlike Harris, Rosen will pay attention to the concerns of all her constituents, the ones who vote for her and the ones who don’t.  Unlike Andy, Wendy will not delete people with opposing views from her Facebook page. Instead, she will listen to their concerns and do her best to make sure their needs are met, too.

Unlike Harris, Rosen will fight for small businesses, not multi-billion dollar corporations. She knows that strengthening small businesses will create many jobs and get the economy back on track.

“For 30 years, I’ve helped new businesses grow. It’s been proven throughout our history that 78% of all new jobs come from… start-ups! This next election must be about Main Street before Wall Street, People before Profit. The middle class and small businesses are the source of our renewal,” Rosen says.

According to her Facebook page, Wendy Rosen is the leading advocate for the “Made in America” movement. Through her books, writings and workshops, Rosen has mentored thousands of small business start-ups for nearly 30 years. As founder of the American Made Alliance, Rosen advocates for more than 125,000 small business artist studios and 20,000 retail stores specializing in American-made products.

As you can see, Rosen has an extensive record of fighting for American jobs and small businesses, and she will do the same, and more, on a national level, if elected to Congress. What is Harris’s record? Tax breaks for the wealthy and tax increases on the middle class. Harris is helping wealthy CEOs become richer while you are struggling. Harris is advocating for the same policies that got the country into this financial mess in the first place, but Rosen will be fighting for the policies that will bring us out of it.

Dr. No – right-wing, Tea Party extremist & obstructionist

Where are the jobs Mr. Harris?  You asked the same question to the President in 2010. I am asking you the same question in 2012, but I know you do not have a good answer for me.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Steven Cenname is a 19-year old Salisbury University student, majoring in Environmental Studies and Political Science. He is also a musician and has a Minor in Music. He describes himself as a “Social Progressive” and believes that Rep. Andy Harris has failed to provide any benefit to the Eastern Shore constituency he is supposed to represent.

Relationships with a Majority

Original post: www.rogerbburtphd.com.

It is that time of year. The primary is over and we have to move into full campaign gear. Campaigns do not begin in the fall. They properly begin now. That is, if you are serious about wanting to win! And serious is what progressives need to be as we work to turn back the tide of right-wing radicals.

And this is the time of year when we rightly focus on our relationships with minorities. I plan to do that, but there is also a leading majority which has caught my attention. If it had not caught my attention, I would have to be brain-dead. And it relates to the War on Women. This new war, which blew up out of the desert of state legislators, clearly points up the need for women to be much more prominent in politics, and leadership positions in general.

And that means we have to be much more proactive in seeking out women as candidates for office and, when we find them, give them our utmost support. Need I point out that we have such a candidate in Wendy Rosen? The choice is not an idle one. Spread the word. The outcome of women entering into politics in ever-increasing numbers represents a sea change in society, with implications we might not have thought about previously.

The War on Women tells us that we need to pay particular attention to gender relations. Surprise! Well, surprise for a reason which has been given less attention than it should. We already know that race relations are far worse than we would hoped for, or might have thought, but we now also need to understand some fundamental truths about gender relations.

One explanation for the War on Women is that we are now seeing some deep underlying problems revealed. It seems that we may be seeing a male backlash as women have become more prominent and, among other things, have gained control of their fertility. Now, women are under attack and the nature of the attack is astounding.

Previously, I noted that the legislative initiatives across the country would serve not just to undermine women’s health, but the well-being of families in general. The attacks are so widespread that it is impossible to attribute the activities to “ooops!” as a function of ideology. And it is being done in the open, and seemingly, without insight or understanding. It is not a stretch of imagination to suggest that this is not just ideological, as the right-wing has gained power. It seems it may be a manifestation of male power needs.

Sorry, guys, I have to say this. What is happening is not just a matter of misguided policies, ideology or slightly impaired judgment. This is serious, with deep implications for the well-being of all of us. It is time to put a clear focus on what is happening. In fact, this is not merely a matter of “gender relations”. Something more fundamental is going on and it would serve us well if we did self-examination and, I suspect, that academics might chime in with some observations from biology and cultural anthropology which would surely clarify the situation. We need to get this under control. The stakes are high and it is high time.

Commit To The Future!

As many of you know, I have endorsed Wendy Rosen in her race against Andy Harris (“Dr. No”) and I have committed to working on the campaign, by coordinating the campaign in Wicomico County.  We have an opportunity to turn the tide on Tea Party fanatics and right-wing extremists, like Andy Harris, who want to take our country back to the 1800s.

Wendy Rosen - A woman, a business owner and committed to working for the best interests of her constituents.

The people are seeing what it would mean to give these right-wing radicals a majority in the Senate and the Presidency.  It would be a catastrophe, reflected in the destruction of 70 years of progress, in making sure our seniors don’t have to live in abject poverty when their working years have passed. It would mean moving backwards in civil rights for minorities, the disabled, women and those who believe America is the standard for the world in civil and political freedom.  It would men an end to education as we know it and the end of science in our schools; the end of protections for our environment, started by Richard Nixon in the ’70s, with the creation of the EPA! The progress, over 40 years, in cleaner water, cleaner air, cleaner land…do we really want to turn back the clock and let our children and grandchildren suffer the consequences?  It would mean a government who says that individual freedoms are important, while taking away the freedoms currently enjoyed, and being fought for, by women and the LGBT community. It would mean an end to science and technology that would keep America a leader in the world, where engineers, doctors and scientists from around the world, flock to for the freedom to research and find the answers to disease, climate change, where we come from and where we’re heading, as a country and as a species.

I believe the tide is changing; that America sees the coming disasters under a Republican, fundamentalist- and Tea Party-led administration, who would be more interested in helping their friends become wealthier, instead of helping everyone to achieve the dreams we were promised as children. There can be no doubt that this is a critical election; every vote will count and it is up to us to elect a person of integrity and compassion.  We know what Andy Harris is; what he believes and who pulls his strings. His vision of Maryland and the country is one where those with wealth are entitled to do whatever they want, to preserve and increase their wealth, while those without wealth, will just have to make do on their own.  It is a vision fueled by religious fervor and elitist attitude; a vision that will continue to destroy the Middle Class and turn our country into two classes: the wealthy and the poor…and we know where the power and control will be concentrated, don’t we?

"Dr. No Needs To Go!"

Please join me as I bring Wendy Rosen’s message, as well as the President’s message, to our neighbors in Wicomico County.  We have a real chance of defeating Dr. No, but I certainly can’t do it alone…I need your help. There’s a lot of work to do between now and November 6th. When Wendy is declared the winner on November 7th, we will all understand that the work we performed was well worth the effort. The chant is clear: “Dr. No Needs To Go…Dr. No Needs To Go…”
